He praises the beauty of Mr. Markham's poem, "The Man with the hoe". He has started to translate it into German. So, his country men able to enjoy it as well. His friends told him that, he should publish it, without hearing Mr. Markham's opinion of it first. He hopes Mr. Markham will take the time to read and shares his thoughts on it.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
